How to Log Student Behavior
Recording student behaviors is at the core of SmileCharts. This guide will show you how to create, edit, and manage behavior logs effectively.
Step 1: Navigate to the Student's Profile
Start by finding the student for whom you want to log behavior:
- Go to the Students page from the main navigation menu
- Find the student in your list (you can use the search bar to quickly locate a specific student)
- Click on the student's name to open their profile
Tip: You can also access your most recent students directly from your Dashboard.
Step 2: Create a New Behavior Log
Once you're on the student's profile page:
- Click the Add Log button (usually located near the top of the page)
- This will open the behavior log form
Step 3: Fill Out the Behavior Log Form
Complete the following information:
- Date: Select the date when the behavior occurred (defaults to today)
- Behavior Category: Choose from academic, social, emotional, or conduct
- Rating: Rate the behavior on a scale of 1-5
- 1 = Needs significant improvement
- 2 = Below expectations
- 3 = Meeting expectations
- 4 = Above expectations
- 5 = Excellent/Outstanding
- Notes: Add detailed observations about the behavior. Be specific and focus on observable actions.
Important: Detailed notes help parents understand the context and make your feedback more actionable. They also help you track patterns over time.
Step 4: Save the Behavior Log
Once you've filled out all the necessary information:
- Review the log to ensure all information is accurate
- Click the Save button to record the behavior log
- The log will now appear in the student's behavior history
Step 5: Print or Share the Behavior Chart (Optional)
After saving the log, you have options to share it with parents:
- Print: Click the Print button to generate a printable chart with a QR code that parents can scan
- Share Link: Use the Share option to get a direct link you can send to parents
- Email: If the student has parent accounts linked, parents will automatically receive notifications about new logs (if they've enabled notifications)
Editing or Deleting Behavior Logs
If you need to make changes to a log:
- Find the log in the student's behavior history
- Click on the log to open it
- Use the Edit or Delete buttons to make changes
Note: Logs that have parent comments cannot be deleted, only edited, to preserve the communication history.
Best Practices for Effective Behavior Logging
- Be consistent: Log behaviors regularly to build a complete picture
- Be specific: Focus on observable behaviors rather than interpretations
- Be balanced: Record both positive behaviors and areas for improvement
- Use appropriate timing: Log behaviors as soon as possible after they occur
- Include context: Note relevant circumstances that might have influenced the behavior
- Focus on growth: Highlight progress and improvement over time
Understanding Points and Rewards
When you log positive behaviors:
- Students earn points for ratings of 4 and 5 (4 = 5 points, 5 = 10 points)
- Consecutive days with positive ratings build streaks, earning bonus points
- Students can redeem points for rewards you create
- Certain point milestones unlock special badges
